Imaging Technology at Coffee Regional Medical Center
Our mission is to work as a community partner, providing quality, but cost effective, images in a professional, caring, and personal manner. In order to meet this mission, we strive to offer advanced imaging technology for all patients. Reports of x-rays are interpreted by board certified radiologists who live within 5 miles of the hospital. Emergency exams and reports can be done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For information on Imaging Services at Coffee Regional Medical Center, call 912-384-1900, ext. 4138.

Services offered at Coffee Regional Medical Center are:

CT Scan
Coffee Regional has a GE Lightspeed Pro 16 slice scanner. This state of the art scanner, scans 16 times faster than traditional scanners. Reports are made available for physicians faster, therefore, patient treatment is faster. CT, sometimes called computerized tomography, is an x-ray that that can see into areas not regularly seen on routine x-rays. The images are images of cross-sections of the body produced while being scanned through equipment in the shape of a dough-nut. Depending on what information your doctor needs from the CT, you may have to have an injection of contrast or you may be asked to drink a contrast that will outline your bowel.

Nuclear Medicine
The Nuclear Medicine department at CRMC has two Nuclear Medicine cameras. A single head Picker, Prism 1500XP, single head and a Philips, Forte, Dual head that scan times are one half the scan times of traditional scanners.

A nuclear medicine exam is done by injecting a very small amount of radioactive isotope into a vein. The isotope tags to the specific organ, tissue, or bones of interest. These tagged areas emit gamma rays that are detected by special cameras and computers to produce images. These images are then interpreted by radiologist who send the reports to patient physicians.

Ultra-Sound
CRMC's ultrasound department consists of 5 ultrasound units, including plethysmography (arterial pressures) and echocardiology (heart ultrasound). Ultrasound images are produced by high frequency sound waves. Moving images can be seen and this equipment is often known as the equipment where babies can be seen in utero. CRMC is on line with one of Savannah's peri-natology offices to do high risk pregnant patients. Level II ultrasound exams being done at CRMC can be transmitted by T1 lines directly into the peri-natologist's office in Savannah. General abdominal organs, vessels (arteries & veins) masses, & cystic structures can be visualized as well.

MRI
In the MRI department, we have a high field 1.5 magnet from Siemens. The Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a method of looking inside the body. Instead of x-rays, the MRI scanner uses magnetism and radio waves to produce remarkably clear pictures of your head, spine, or other parts of your body. The scanner consists of a strong magnet with a radio transmitter and receiver. MRI produces soft-tissue images and is used to distinguish normal healthy soft tissue from diseased tissue. This unit is also the dough-nut shaped. Depending on what information your doctor needs from the MRI, an injection of contrast may be required.

Mammography - Breast Biopsy
Coffee Regional's newly installed digital mammography system has incorporated the most advanced mammography technologies available. Unlike standard film mammograms, our digital system provides a clear high-resolution image within seconds. With this digital image, physicians are able to adjust the brightness, change the contrasts, or even zoom in on specific areas of interest. The system also utilizes computer-aided (CAD) detection technology, called R2 Image Checker, which helps reduce oversights and increase the chances of early detection. The CAD system analyzes the image and highlights any suspicious areas that warrant a second review by the radiologist. The department is both FDA and ACR accredited.

Breast Biopsy
When an abnormal mammogram is found, a patient has a choice to have a small invasive biopsy or surgery. Here at Coffee Regional Medical Center we use the Stereotactic breast biopsy that takes a sample of the abnormal breast tissue by inserting a needle by the guidance of a computer and computerized pictures. Ultrasound guided biopsies are also done, dependant on mass location and/or size.

Bone Densitometry
Bone Density Scans are simple, painless, and usually take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. This technology is used to detect and track osteoporosis. The bone mass is measured in two important areas, the hip and spine.

General Diagnostic Procedures
These procedures make up the majority of exams at Coffee Regional Medical Center. We currently have 2 IVP/Trauma rooms and 2 Digital fluoro rooms. One chest room with an over head tube and table for routine exams. Also, we have a C-arm configured special procedure room.
