Understanding the basic building blocks of nutrition is essential to making healthy food choices. Being educated in healthy food choices is crucial to reaching a healthy weight. Instead of diets, our Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) will work with you to ensure you are educated on how different foods work with our body to create energy and maintain a healthy weight. Each patient will have unique needs when it comes to nutrition. Chronic diseases, such as diabetes, require careful nutrition planning to ensure you remain healthy while working towards your weight loss goal.
A key component to a healthy lifestyle, weight loss, and remaining healthy is regular physical activity. Gyms can be intimidating to many just beginning their weight loss journey, hindering many from reaching their weight loss goals. Bariatric & Metabolic Center offers our patients access to an in-house, state-of-the-art gym, and weekly fitness classes including one that is designed around patients who may have limited mobility. We encourage all of our patients to attend our fitness classes to learn the basics of exercise and to get started on incorporating regular physical activity into their daily routines. Weight Loss Surgery
Bariatric or weight loss surgery has been around for many decades. Although not an option for everyone struggling with obesity, bariatric surgery can be an effective tool for some patients who have been unsuccessful with previous weight loss attempts. Weight loss surgery can significantly improve and potentially cure an individual of numerous medical conditions including hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, chronic headaches, and urinary incontinence.
Bariatric surgery can be classified as restrictive, malabsorptive, or both. Restrictive operations decrease food intake and promote fullness. Malabsorptive procedures decrease transit time and reduce nutrient absorption. A combination procedure incorporates both of these elements. A list of commonly performed procedures is outlined below.
Bariatric & Metabolic Center offers a procedure known as Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. This is a restrictive and malabsorptive weight loss procedure that permanently decreases the size of your stomach by two thirds. The procedure is completed laparoscopically through small incisions on the abdomen. In most cases, it requires one night of inpatient hospitalization with very little downtime. The expected percent excess body weight loss with vertical sleeve gastrectomy procedure is 50-70%.
Roux en y gastric bypass surgery is both a restrictive and malabsorptive procedure that permanently decreases the size of your stomach. This procedure can be completed laparoscopically through small incisions on the abdomen. It may require a multi-night hospitalization with a slightly longer downtime than the gastric sleeve. The expected weight loss following this procedure is 60-75%. This procedure is better suited for patients with severe acid reflux, type II diabetes, or a higher BMI.
Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is a restrictive procedure that is accomplished by placing a device around the top portion of the stomach to decrease the volume of food. The band has the ability to be adjusted as needed. This procedure is the least invasive. It was once very popular but has fallen out of favor as it is the least effective bariatric procedure requiring the most follow-up. While most bariatric centers no longer place bands routinely, here at Bariatric & Metabolic Center, we can help manage those that have been placed previously.
Bariatric Psychological Services
Mental health is just as important as physical health when it comes to weight loss. For many patients, weight gain is a result of a negative relationship with food. Bariatric & Metabolic Center patients undergo a comprehensive psychological assessment with an experienced psychologist to help uncover any potential triggers for excessive eating. This is a critical step in long term success.
Surgery is not for everyone.
Weight-loss surgery is not an option for all patients. Each patient is evaluated individually by a multidisciplinary team of bariatric health experts to determine the best treatment strategy. There are many factors that prohibit a patient from being able to complete weight-loss surgery. Your one-on-one consultation will allow us to assist you in determining what is best for you.
