Douglas, Ga. (March 18, 2026) — Recently, Coffee Regional Medical Center was proud to participate in the Rural Hospital Emergency Department Collaborative Meeting for participating rural KidsABC hospitals, hosted by the Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center at Mercer University School of Medicine. The meeting brought together hospitals from across the region focused on strengthening pediatric emergency care.

Representing Coffee Regional, Rachel Spivey, MHA, BSN, RN, Director of Emergency Services and Intensive Care, along with Amy Rowell, BSN, RN, Assistant Director of Emergency Services, delivered a presentation highlighting a recent community-wide disaster drill conducted at Coffee Regional Medical Center.

The large-scale drill, held in Fall 2025, focused on preparing for an influx of pediatric patients in a high-acuity emergency scenario. The exercise brought together multiple agencies, including local Fire and Rescue teams, CRMC EMS, and regional law enforcement, demonstrating a coordinated response to a simulated mass-casualty event involving children.

Upon arrival at the hospital, patients were triaged based on predetermined diagnoses and treated by a multidisciplinary team of Coffee Regional providers. The response team included a trauma surgeon, ER physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and numerous support staff members, all working together to ensure timely and effective care.

“These types of collaborative drills are essential to ensuring our team is prepared to respond quickly and effectively, especially when caring for our most vulnerable patients,” said Spivey. “When seconds count, preparation and teamwork make all the difference.”

Participation in initiatives like KidsABC and the implementation of comprehensive disaster drills allow Coffee Regional Medical Center to meet critical training requirements while strengthening partnerships with community responders. These efforts ultimately enhance the hospital’s ability to deliver high-quality, coordinated care during emergencies.

Coffee Regional Medical Center remains committed to advancing emergency preparedness and ensuring the safety and well-being of the communities it serves.
